February 25, 2025: Two hundred and forty-six (246) years ago on February 25, 1779, the unconditional surrender of Fort Sackville at Vincennes, Indiana was accepted by Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark. This came 12 years after a 1763 prohibition from the British government preventing settlement in Kentucky and other areas west of the Appalachians.
Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark, the older brother of explorer William Clark, led only a few hundred men to gain control of the fort. Throughout the Revolutionary war, Clark was able to continue fighting off the British attempts to drive Americans out of the area. This allowed the United States to cede the land in the Treaty of Paris in 1783.[1]
